After the 2019 Southeast Asian Games was held in the Philippines, the 31st SEA Games which was supposed to take place at Hanoi, Vietnam on November 21 to December 2 was postponed due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, the postponed SEA Games would be rescheduled on 2022 with still no specific date given.
“I believe it would be in the latter part of May 2022,” Tolentino said.
Regardless of the postponement, the estimated budget for the 31st SEA Games was P200 million as Tolentino had also requested it in lined with the General Appropriations Act (GAA) for Filipino athletes’ preparation and participation in various major competitions in 2022 including the 2022 SEA Games.
“Vietnam is expected to decide on the hosting this October. In the event that Vietnam decides to defer the hosting of the games, the additional P200 million shall be treated as savings and should be reverted to the National Treasury,” Tolentino added.
Tolentino nudges the House and Senate to add financial assistance through the Philippine Sports Commission for the Filipino athletes' preparation and participation not only of the SEA Games but also of other major competitions.
